        <p>Nein, Sie brauchen dort keine Rede zu halten. Das tut jeweilen, vermutlich auf Grund vorausgehender Verabredung, irgend ein Angelsachse unter den Doktorierten. Dagegen hält der Rektor beim Essen eine Ansprache, bei der Sie gut aufpassen müssen, um im rechten Augenblick, wenn Sie erwähnt werden, liebenswürdig zu lächeln. Frack ist nicht nötig. Den Talar leiht man Ihnen sicher von der Universität; so war’s jedenfalls in <placeName ref="kbga-places-808">Glasgow</placeName>. Man wird Ihnen nachher den «<foreign xml:lang="eng">hood</foreign>», eine Art Kapuze in leuchtenden Farben, das eigentliche Ehrenzeichen, zum Kauf anbieten. Ich habe es leichtsinniger Weise getan, obwohl der Scherz 4 Pfund kostete, und bin nachher bei allen Universitätsanlässen hier darin herumgelaufen. Wenn schon, denn schon, dachte ich und erklärte hier den staunenden Medizinern etc.: ich sei nämlich der päpstliche Legat. Der Doktorierungsakt selber ist überaus feierlich: ich mußte knieen wie s. Z. bei der Konfirmation, und dazu wurde etwas in unverständlichem englischem Latein über mich gemurmelt. Die Studenten aber dürfen nach alter Übung Krakehl dazu machen. <placeName ref="kbga-places-322">St. Andrews</placeName> ist eine putzige herrlich gelegene Miniaturuniversität. Sehen Sie zu, daß Sie sich noch rechtzeitig die Hypothese von der ephesinischen Gefangenschaft aneignen, weil der sehr nette Kollege <persName ref="kbga-actors-101">Duncan</persName> dort besonders darauf erpicht ist.<note xml:id="n01">Vgl. <bibl corresp="kbga-bibls-1251"><persName ref="kbga-actors-101">G. T.<note xml:id="n02"><persName ref="kbga-actors-324">Norman Walker Porteous</persName> (geb. 9.9.1898), seit 1931 Professor in St. Andrews, 1937 in Edinburgh. Dort erreichten ihn das Telegramm, das seine Versetzung in den Ruhestand aussprach, und die Berufung nach <placeName ref="kbga-places-5">Basel</placeName> (s. <ref type="pub" target="1094#fn_n01">Nr. 92, Anm. 1</ref>).</note>
